Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation
The Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation group of the University of Padova is the highest volume center in Italy for Kidney Transplantation, with the largest experience in living donor transplantation and mini-invasive techniques for donor nephrectomies.
The group is involved in the most significant international multicentric clinical trials for the development of new immunosuppressive therapies.
The research topics are primarily:
Evaluation and utilization of ECD and dual kidney transplantation
Hypothermic and normothermic kidney machine perfusion
Access to transplantation for sensitized recipients
AB0 incompatible and HLA incompatible kidney transplantation
Kidney paired exchange
SARS-CoV 2 infection in immunocompromised patients
Pancreas transplantation
Islet transplantation and islet autotransplantation
Mini-invasive (laparoscopic) nephrectomies in ADPKD patients pre or post-transplantation
Research activities
1) Therapeutic desensitization approach in hyperimmune patients for kidney transplantation
2) Microencapsulation of beta cells for islet transplantation immunosuppression free
3) Dgf in kidney transplantation
4) Remote platform development for glycemic monitoring of type 1 diabetes patients undergoing islet transplantation
5) Novel biomarkers for renal function
6) Human islet transplantation in a model of type 1 Diabetes in immunodeficient NOD/SCID mice: assessment of potency of different islet purification fractions in autologous and allogenic transplantation

Funding
- Fondazione Veneta per la Terapia Cellulare del Diabete TCD: Founded on November 9, 2022, it was established to support the activities of the Center for Cellular Therapy of Diabetes, inaugurated in 2021 at the Hospital-University of Padua. Its goal is to initiate, in the Veneto region, a pancreatic islet transplantation program for patients with type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent). https://www.fondazionetcd.org/
- Cassa di Risparmio Foundation of Padua and Rovigo contributed to the funding of the three-year project on microencapsulated islet transplantation, titled ""MICROENCAPSULATED ISLET TRANSPLANTATION: A PATH TOWARDS A LIFE WITHOUT INSULIN AND WITHOUT IMMUNOSUPPRESSION IN TYPE 1 DIABETIC PATIENTS (IF2 STUDY),"" which the Regional Center for Diabetes Cell Therapy is working on.
